prePosterous

Kate's posterous playground

OMG!!!! and Hallelujah!

Of all the verions of Hallelujah, Rufus Wainwright's has always been my favorite, with k.d. lang's a close second. However, today I think I have to change my mind.

My front runner now, I think, is this one by Lind, Nilsen, Fuentes & Holm:

(They've disabled the 'embed' function for this video; boohoo because I'd love to host that rendition on my prePosterous page.)

KISS

You know it: "Keep It Simple Stupid"

My focus these days is on "Will it simplify my life?" It especially helps with consumer decisions. But also in most other things.

Today I unsubscribed from 2 mailing lists that were getting pretty immaterial and annoying. I'm going to do that more often. I read way too much email. Simplify my computer life.

Reminds me of the book I read about 10 years ago about de-cluttering one's life. That was all about the stuff surrounding me. What a great change it made, reading that and doing something about it. I'll have to ask Dawna, who loaned me the book, what the name/author was and post it here.
Addendum later: Don Aslett, Clutter's Last Stand: It's Time To De-Junk Your Life
http://www.amazon.com/Clutters-Last-Stand-Time-Junk/dp/0898791375
Anyway, now I'm not only decluttering the "stuff" again, but also simplifying ....my days, my computer work, my mind. Feels great.
.......

Here's Ritzy, my plugged-in cat.

things I'm thinking about today

illi coffee liqueur

RV rental in 2009
can't beat this deal

but will camping be warm enough in March? Hmmm.

satellite programming
I don't really need those extra Bell channels.
I can't believe they succeeded in up-selling me to get them last month. Hardly anybody gets through my upsell armor.

Jane Austen
Watched the movie The Jane Austen Book Club last nite.
Last week watched a really FUN TV series (4 parts), Lost in Austen
I just realized I haven't read a word of Jane's writing! even though I've watched & enjoyed almost every film version of every book she wrote.

Snow
But really, I'm trying NOT to think about it. Why did Vancouver's winter get so Saskatchewan-y this year? When will it go AWAY!!!!!?????

Excellent, online learning -- tons of topics! DISCOUNT code here

Where can you take a 6 week course for $25? [AND I have a discount deal to offer you at the end of this!]

I've been a student at LVS Online for about 20 different courses. They have a wide range of topics to choose from, like a community center kind of thing. The instructors are knowledgeable and really friendly. The way it works is:
- On Saturday (for 6 weeks in a row) a new lesson is posted online, along with homework assignments.
- The homework is about 2 - 4 hours a week. There's no deadlines, though; if you can't get it done that week, it's OK to relax and enjoy the process.
- When you're done your homework, you "hand it in" -- various classes have different ways you'd do this. They tell you how, so don't worry about not knowing how to do things online.
- The "classroom" for each course is its own private discussion forum, where you can ask questions, chat with the instructor and/or fellow students, discuss each others' work, etc. It's fun!
- You can request to get a certificate at the end if you want, or just do it for fun and learning.

Warning! Once you start taking classes at LVS Online, you may not want to stop. I haven't stopped yet after nearly 10 years. I'm signed up for the January session to take the "Artist's Workshop" course. Returning students only pay $20 a course.

Here's the discount code to get a 20% discount if you're a new student. When you register, use this code: JAN09  LVS says: "Registration ends January 7th. However, we have a 2 week late registration period and the coupon code expires January 21st."

At least check out their huge list of courses at http://www.lvsonline.com/schedule.shtml

Hope you enjoy it! If you want to ask any questions by posting comments, I could try to answer.

January registration is now open
Classrooms open Jan. 5 2009
Registration closes Jan. 7, 2009
First lesson posts Jan. 10, 2009
............................

Oh ya, it would be great if you give them my name (Kate Britt) when you register. They have a system where you can earn certificates to take courses by referring new students to them. Thanks!

winter views from Skyhome

The longest cold & snowy spell Vancouver, BC has seen for decades... they say since '69.

It's beautiful and fun, takes me back to my childhood on the prairies in the 50s, when the snow banks were typically so high I couldn't see my house as I approached, walking home from school down the car tracks in the never-ploughed street.

Today there are these beautiful views from our warm nest in Skyhome.

this really IS prePosterous. Imagine a world...

Imagine a world where software developers fix things before you even notice something has gone wrong, so that means b4 you have a chance to report the issue and/or start the process of begging developers for a fix. Just imagine that world.

Well, it's real. It's here. I mean... HERE, right here. At Posterous.

I got a note today from Garry Tan, Cofounder, Posterous.com. Just like a personal email, though I'm sure it was a group mail many more of you got it too, anybody has already integrated their posterous blog with their facebook. Anyhoo, Garry tells me about a problem they've identified concerning the integrated apps, a problem I hadn't noticed yet, and he's telling me it's already fixed.

I'm like, For Real?!

Kudos. Again. To. Posterous. !!!!

Lisa, this one's for you ... AND for my hard-of-hearing friends

My partner and I just completed a course in Speech Reading at VCC (Vancouver Community College). I'm just throwing out a mention here for anybody who's in Vancouver + is hard of hearing or has friends/family who are HofH. (Anybody can attend.)

Lisa Dillon-Edgett, PhD, Audiologist, is the instructor and she's amazing, knowledgeable, personably, resourceful, and helpful. What's more, VCC's courses for the deaf and hard of hearing are tuition free.

Here's a link for those of you who are lucky enough to be able to hear perfectly. It can kind of help you understand what it's like to be missing out on some of the world's wonderful sounds.....
